Synergies of UV Disinfection and Ozone in Water Treatment
This article examines how combining ozone and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection can create a more effective and economical water treatment strategy than using either technology alone. Through two case studies, the research demonstrates how ozone can improve water quality by controlling taste, odour, colour, and organic contaminants while increasing UV transmittance, allowing UV systems to operate more efficiently. The findings highlight the complementary strengths of ozone and UV treatments in achieving pathogen control, including inactivation of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, while reducing capital and operating costs. The study illustrates how integrating these advanced treatment technologies can provide a robust, multi-barrier approach to meeting modern drinking water quality and regulatory requirements.
